CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS IN THE CURRICULUM 2014-16
Contemporary circus is sport, art and learning in one. Therefore youngsters across the country will now be introduced to contemporary circus in school. With a DKK 5.5 million grant from Nordea-fonden for Contemporary Circus in the Curriculum, circus will become an alternative to football and mathematics alike.
18 municipalities put contemporary circus on the agenda – and into the 6th-9th graders’ curriculum for the 2014 academic year. Contemporary circus challenges body and brain, and will benefit the youngsters via the workshop programme organised by Københavns Internationale Teater, cultural centres/theatres and municipalities all over Denmark
Contemporary circus – physical, creative and social learning
Contemporary circus is in-between sports and art, and it is therefore an obvious tool in school. It gets the children out of the chairs, makes them sweat, makes them think creatively, and gets them to cooperate. Experience proves that it is one of the most including and engaging learning forms, and that it captures the interest of all pupils.
Contemporary circus stimulates the children’s motor skills, their strength and agility. But unlike most sports, there’s no competitiveness. Children become aware of how their body act, how to trust one another and how to feel at ease when being touched.
The programme
Come autumn 2014, artists will visit schools in 18 municipalities and teach the youngsters how to juggle, turn somersaults, walk the tightrope, and how to use their new abilities in a creative way. In 2015 contemporary circus will move into 23 municipalities, and come 2016 there will be 28 municipalities involved. The 3-year programme will reach approx. 8,000 youngsters. Contemporary circus will also be ensured a role as an activity at a.o. youth clubs – on par with going to football or dance.

Further education for teachers
The teachers will receive further training in order to handle contemporary circus activities.
Education material
A website dedicated to education material and inspiration will be up and running in the spring of 2014. Schools which do not participate in the project may also look here for inspiration if they want to work with contemporary circus.
Partners
In 2014 the 18 partners are cultural centres, theatres and municipalities in Skagen/Frederikshavn, Aalborg, Thy, Randers, Aarhus, Sønderborg, Odense, Guldborgsund, Næstved, Slagelse, Rødovre, København, Ballerup, Furesø, Hørsholm, Rudersdal, Helsingør og Halsnæs. In addition to whom we have Dansk Artist Forbund, Cirkusmuseet and TinCanCompany as well as a large group of professional Danish artists.
In late summer/autumn 2014 there will be a contemporary circus tour and ongoing guest performances at/by Gjethuset, Helsingør Teater, Kulturværftet, Trommen, Galaksen, Mantzius LIVE, Baltoppen LIVE, Viften, Slagelse Musikhus, Grønnegades Kaserne, Teatret Masken, Kulturmaskinen, Alsion, Teater Nordkraft, Thy Teater, Aarhus Scenekunstcenterand Kappelborg.
Budget
The 3-year project has a total budget of DKK 10.5 million, of which Nordea-fonden contributes DKK 5.5 million, and the remainder is found locally and regionally.
